South America (CONMEBOL): 4.5 spots. 46 teams will compete
for 4 direct places. The winner of the other 0.5 place would progress to the Inter-confederation playoff.
FIRST ROUND: Round-robin Format

All 10 national teams from CONMEBOL entered qualification.
The draw for the first round was held on 25 July 2015 in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Inter-confederation play-offs
•
The draw for the inter-confederations playoff was held on 25 July 2015 in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
The fifth-placed team from CONMEBOL was drawn against the first-placed team from OFC, with the CONMEBOL team hosting the second leg.
The inter-confederations playoff was held on 6-14 November 2017.
•
The fifth-placed team of AFC was drawn against the fourth-placed team from CONCACAF.
Peru won 2–0 on aggregate and qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Notes and References
FIFA awarded Peru and Chile 3–0 wins as a result of Bolivia fielding the ineligible player Nelson Cabrera. Originally Bolivia had defeated Peru 2–0 and drawn 0–0 with Chile. Nelson Cabrera had previously represented Paraguay and did not meet eligibility rules.
