Serbia and Montenegro was a country created from the two remaining federal republics of Yugoslavia after its breakup in 1992. The republics of Serbia and Montenegro together established a federation in 1992 as the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, which was renamed Serbia and Montenegro in 2003. After the dissolution with Montenegro on 3 June 2006, Serbia became the legal successor of the union. On the other hand, on the basis of an independence referendum held in May 2006, Montenegro declared independence on 3 June of that year.
