The Iran national football team (Persian: تیم ملی فوتبال ایران‎) represents Iran in international football and is controlled by the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (Persian: فدراسیون فوتبال ایران‎, FFIRI), the governing body for football in Iran.

The FFIRI was founded in 1920, became a member of FIFA in 1948, and a member of AFC in 1958. Iran did not have a professional league until 1970. Most teams participated in city championships. Taj (now known as Esteghlal F.C.)  and FC Persepolis were the two most popular football clubs in Iran of those times and continue to be in the present.  The 2001-2002 season saw the beginning of the first professional football league in Iran. The first champion of the professional era was FC Persepolis.

Iran is one of the most successful national teams in Asia. They won the Asian Cup three times (1968, 1972, and 1976) and qualified for the World Cup five times (1978, 1998, 2006, 2014, and 2018)
