  UNITED STATES

The United States national football team represents United States in international football and is controlled by the United States Soccer Federation (USSF), the governing body for football in the United States.

The USSF was founded in1913, became a member of FIFA in 1914, and a member of CONCACAF in 1961. Soccer in United States began around 1869. The first American Soccer League (ASL) was established in 1921. For several years it was the second most popular professional sports league in the country. However, disputes between the United States Football Association (USFA) and ASL, combined with the onset of the Great Depression in 1929, led to the league's collapse in 1933 and the demise of the sport in the United States. The popularity of soccer in the U.S. has been growing again since the 1960s, and received a significant boost when the United States organized the 1994 World Cup. In 1967 there were 100,000 people playing soccer in the United States; by 1984, that number had grown to over 4 million; and by 2006, there were over 24 million Americans playing soccer. The Major League Soccer (MLS), the highest professional soccer league in the US, began play in 1996. The first champion of the MLS was D.C. United, and the runner-up was Los Angeles Galaxy.  Since the start of the MLS, USA's top clubs have been Los Angeles Galaxy and D.C. United, bothwith 4 championships.

United States is the second most successful football team in North America, Central America and the Caribbean, the area commonly known as CONCACAF. The Americans have won the CONCACAF Gold Cup a record 4 times.
