The Iran national football team (Persian: تیم ملی فوتبال ایران‎) represents Iran in international football and is controlled by the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran (Persian: فدراسیون فوتبال ایران‎, FFIRI), the governing body for football in Iran.

The FFIRI was founded in1920, became a member of FIFA in 1948, and a member of AFC in 1958. Iran did not have a professional league until 1970. Most teams participated in city championships. Taj (now known as Esteghlal F.C. (باشگاه فوتبال استقلال تهران)  and FC Persepolis were the two most popular football clubs in Iran of those times and continue to be in the present.  The 2001-2002 season saw the beginning of the first professional football league in Iran. The first champion of the professional era was FC Persepolis.

Iranians have won three times the Asian Cup, and they have finished third four times.
