  PORTUGAL

The Portugal national football team (Portuguese: Seleção Nacional de Futebol de Portugal) represents Portugal in international football and is controlled by Portuguese Football Federation (Portuguese: Federação Portuguesa de Futebol, FPF), the governing body for football in Portugal.

The FPF was founded in 1914, became a of FIFA in 1923, and a member of UEFA in 1954. Football was brought to Portugal in 1875 by Portuguese students educated in the English public school system. However, the Primeira Liga was not founded until 1934, almost 60 years later. The first champion was FC Porto in the 1934-1935 season, and the runner-up was Sporting CP. Since then, Portugal's top clubs have been Benfica with 32 championships, FC Porto with 29, and Sporting CP with 22.

Portugal is one of the important teams in Europe, even when they have not got any major title so far. Moreover, it is worth noting that Portugal has one of the best players in the world: Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, commonly known as Cristiano Ronaldo.
